Consults

My consultation service is still delayed due to the Omicron variant of COVID. MP Family History Center will reopen when it is safe to gather together again. I am continuing my consultations to help people research ancestors. If you need help, I am available to give individual consultations lasting 75–90 minutes plus short hand-outs if needed. Precedence will be given to past students who were unable to attend their consultations due to the COVID-19 lockdown.

Consultations will be held at the Menlo Park Family History Center in Menlo Park on Saturdays between 10:00 AM and &1:00 PM.  The fee for the first two consults is $75 each if you are not attending a class through San Mateo or Palo Alto. The fee is payable in cash in advance.  Please email me, Inge Harding-Barlow, at ihb146 AT eskimo DOT com to arrange for a consultation.

What you need to prepare before our first appointment:

  • What are you interested in researching? The more specific you can be about why you want a consultation, the better the outcome will be. It is best to focus on one family name and complete it before moving on to the next. Come prepared with questions you want to research.

For example, a good question would be "I know my great grandfather served in the Civil War, how do I find out more information attached to that event?"

Or another example, with which I have had success is "My great grandmother came from eastern Europe, but I can't find any records for her." This is because the countries' boundaries have moved a great deal over time.

  • Please bring a printout of whatever you have on the family you're focusing on. This includes a "pedigree" chart including at least 6 generations of the individual you are researching. This pedigree chart does not have to be completely filled out, but fill in what you do know.

If you are looking for generic advice or advice on how to work with a specific genealogy website, consider looking for online tutorials.

I will assign “homework”, and once you have completed that, you can come back to check your results, and get more help if required.
